History
The Catholic Parish of St. Dominic is a community of believers in the Risen Lord called to worship, to on-going spiritual growth, to faith celebrations, and to commitment to charity, justice and peace.
Saint Dominic Catholic Community is a historic parish with a proud Dominican heritage dating back to over 125 years. Located in the heart of Washington DC, steps away from centers of government and the city's most popular tourist sites, we warmly welcome visitors from all over to join us in worship.
The parish church, with its impressive illuminated steeple, is a central fixture of the Southwest Washington DC neighborhood, located just off the National Mall and near the Potomac River.
Originally dedicated in 1875, the church's main architectural feature is its 24 stained glass windows that illustrate important events in the life of St. Dominic. Although the church suffered a fire in 1885 which did substantial damage to the interior, it was rebuilt and the landmark steeple added in 1887. The parish was consecrated in 1919 and renovated about 40 years ago. It seats about 800 and a real bell in the tower rings the Angelus at noon and at 6 p.m.
The acoustics of the main church are arguably the best of any church in the area and greatly enhance the singing of the community. The Roosevelt Organ of St. Dominic Catholic Church was installed in 1887. It consists of both enclosed and unenclosed elements for the Great, Swell, Choir, and Pedal Organs. Musical support for weekdays and weekend liturgies is provided by a vibrant music ministry that includes Cantors and Leaders of Song, a traditional SATB choir, and a multi-instrumented and voiced ensemble.
